JAMES W. NORTON / VISUAL ARTIST

I explore the transitions that occur between places, where speculative narratives create new territories, new spaces. I investigate these terrains both in theoretical and practical mediums. Working in paint, collage, film, audio, found material and site-specific installations, I allow chance to intervene in the process of seeing, thinking and making.

Landscape plays a pivotal role in my artwork as subject and context creating a dialogue between the shifting dynamics of the past, present and future. A landscape where multi-layered traces of meaning exist. I am drawn to the spaces in-between, liminality, the periphery, and what lies unseen outside the edge.

Corkscrew Hill Photo
I have recently been commissioned by Filmpoem and The Poetry Society to create a film for Roger Phillip Dennis who won the first prize in the Nation Poetry Competition with his poem 'Corkscrew Hill Photo'. The film stars Kelcy Davenport with soundscapes by Farah Mulla, music by Dissimilar, and with great help from the Queen's Head in Newton.

Echo:
Soundscape and film installation at the Archbishop's Palace at Southwell Minster. Based on the poem 'Descant' by Mario Petrucci. Working with composer Asa Bennett, writer Allison Walker and VFX supervisor Mike Griggs, voice of the Palace narrated by Alisdair Simpson. The project allows the Palace to tell it's own tale, an emotive interchange between emptiness and occupation for over 2000 years.

LEGION
Is to be shown at the Arts Picturehouse in Cambridge.
Legion is film-poem exploring the residual trauma of a Post-industrial Landscape in the hinterlands of estuarial East London. It was filmed at the now demolished site of the great Gas Lite and Coal Company once formed in Beckton, on the north bank of the Thames near Gallions Reach. This area has witnessed some extraordinary events that have interwoven both fact and fiction into its decaying topography.
